Synopsis
Let’s not mince words. Todd’s a loser. He has no job, no prospects, and almost no drive. With his wife ready to take the children and go, Todd buys the family their dream home. Todd takes a chance on a house that needs much more upkeep than a few coats of paint and new carpet. And little does Todd know, in the attic resides a terrifying and deadly spirit who does not do well with cohabitation. But while this frightening spectre may have murderous tendencies, she might just be what Todd needs to turn his life around.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall meets the Grudge, you know you’re in for a hell of a ride! From the comedic and possibly unhinged minds of Adam F. Goldberg and Hans Rodionoff comes this off-beat love story that will warmly haunt the very depths of beating and non-beating hearts alike.
Writers: Adam F. Goldberg, Hans Rodionoff
Goldberg (that Goldberg) and Rodinoff create a strange tale here with Todd a deadbeat dad, husband and artist who instead of dealing with his problems dreams of the perfect house with the perfect family.
The house he buys, a stunning mansion full of period features like a greenhouse, crystal chandelier and an evil spirit that kills and consumes anybody. But the biggest problem is that Todd forgot to tell his wife he blew their savings on a money pit and that he’s back on the booze.
When he hires some dodgy handymen to start repairing the house, he leaves them to start unaware that they only wanted the job to rob him. But an encounter with the cannibalistic spook quickly despatches them.
The humour is a bit childish and reminds me of Rick and Morty meets Family Guy but there is a market for that but don’t buy this if you expect Goldberg style 80s humour its feet are squarely in the adult camp.
Artist: Eduardo Garcia
Garcia and Bevard create a slapstick animation style of horror with its tongue firmly in its cheek. Does every visual joke stick, nope but there’s another along in a minute so don’t worry. Micing genres can be fraught with issues as you either alienate both genres or confuse new readers but this one sticks overall and makes a strange addition to this week’s comics.
Overall Thoughts
It’s a bizarre book with Todd having almost, scratch that, no redeemable characteristics. He’s obsessive, egotistical and delusional and so needy that even the spirit can’t be bothered to kill him. It’s dark, weird and hilarious. This now makes the ghost the main protagonist which is an interesting switch.
